While last year's quality problems in China with toys and some other consumer products created awareness among western consumers and companies importing from China - no significant move in the importers' habits happened as a result of this - it seems that the toxic milk scandal occurred a few weeks ago is finally leading to shifts in common practices, both in China and Western countries.
Indeed, while the China Government is leading their programme of quality control certification across a myriad of industries, the world's biggest importer of Chinese goods Wal-Mart has just fired 180 staff from their Chinese sourcing offices, and appointed a third party company for all their QC in China.

I think that WalMart should not get benefit from the economic recession. This is just disgusting.

I still haven't got that why Wal-Mart and australiawholesalers.com have fired their staff from Chinese outsourcing offices. I think that it is a foolish step.

Yeah, the most guilty company when it comes to outsourcing is definitely Walmart. They put so much pressure on their suppliers to lower prices that the suppliers are literally forced to move jobs oversees just so they can continue to compete in the Walmart economy. It's sickening if you really think about it.

There are things the press didn't relay because they don't have the info... But it seems like Wal-Mart's internal QC staff was totally corrupted. That's also why they outsource this function to Intertek.

Yeah, Walmart is benefiting several ways from our financial ruin. Did you see the article in the Financial Times today with the CEO, Lee Scott, rejoicing at the plummeting economy because it helps Walmart's bottom line?
This was the part that really killed me:
"He included the possibility of Wal-Mart and its Sam's Club warehouse chain acquiring sites from retailers that were going out of business, with the chance to "negotiate very good rents"."
After outsourcing millions of jobs they can't even hide their glee as the economy tanks and they get the benefits.

I feel that scandals like these, unfortunately, are the only way to truly put pressure on Chinese manufacturers to improve their quality standards. Great post.
